Craniosacral Therapy is a very gentle modality that may help balance the nervous system and reduce stress. A series of light holds are placed at various locations on the recipient's body, especially centering on the head, neck, abdomen, hips, base of the spine, or other areas of pain or restriction. The client is fully clothed (preferably in loose-fitting, comfortable clothing) and primarily face up on a thick foam pad on top of the treatment table. The therapist's hands make simultaneous contact at two places on the body, creating a kind of healing container. The recipient may feel sensations of warmth, gentle tingling, or deep relaxation.
Craniosacral therapy developed out of the research and teachings of the 19th century American osteopathic physician A.T. Still, who had studied the hands-on healing practices of native healers. Those early healers and their followers believed that healing happened through the intersection of the body, mind, and spirit.
Dr. John Upledger, D.O. (1932-2012) is credited with coining the term "craniosacral therapy" and developed a method for teaching and training others in the techniques (there are other schools and approaches).
After spending more than 150-hours learning and practicing this fascinating modality in massage school, I began my studies at the Upledger Institute this year and will continue taking advanced courses there.
